Carlos completed his undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate degrees from Florida International University. Carlos’ tutoring journey began with a passion for sharing knowledge and making a positive impact on students’ lives. From the moment he started tutoring and witnessed students’ growth in confidence and improved grades, he knew tutoring was one of his callings! Since then, he has been tutoring for over three years and has helped dozens of students, both nationally and internationally, reach their academic goals. Carlos has also helped countless undergraduate students develop their research projects and navigate the world of scientific academia.
Carlos perceives tutoring as an invaluable opportunity to effect tangible change in students' lives. The unique satisfaction of seeing a student's eyes light up when they finally grasp a concept, combined with his own continuous learning as he tutors students with diverse challenges, fuels his passion for tutoring. He specializes in tutoring middle school math, pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, statistics, middle school science, biology, chemistry, environmental studies, ecology, and marine biology.
For Carlos, tutoring isn’t just about teaching; it's about empowering students to realize their potential and fostering a lifelong curiosity for learning. His tutoring style is student-centered and adaptive, focusing on the unique needs and learning styles of each individual. He aims to create a supportive and engaging environment where students feel comfortable exploring and making mistakes, which are vital parts of the learning process. He uses a mix of practical examples, interactive discussions, and hands-on activities to make the learning experience more dynamic and memorable.
One of Carlos’ greatest strengths as a tutor is keeping students engaged by connecting academic material to real-world applications and their personal interests. Whether simplifying complex ecological concepts or employing storytelling techniques, Carlos brings a fresh perspective to his lessons. His natural knack for simplifying complex concepts is another one of his standout traits. Carlos’ proficiency in breaking down larger tasks into smaller, manageable components not only facilitates student understanding but also cultivates a sense of progress and momentum.
Outside of tutoring, Carlos is deeply passionate about ecology and several hobbies: painting allows him to express his creativity, hiking allows him to rejuvenate, and listening to albums from start to finish allows him to appreciate music to its fullest. Adding an extra layer of joy to these pursuits is the companionship of his beloved dog. Carlos also bravely confronts his deepest fears every day: snakes and flying. His commute to work involves traveling by airboat and helicopter.
Valeria earned a Bachelor’s degree from Emory University, where she served for three years as a Writing Center Tutor. She has also served as a Certified English Language Learner tutor and Matriculate College Advising Fellow. Additionally, she has worked as an Executive Assistant and College Prep Coordinator at Freedom University for two years, an organization dedicated to providing college prep classes, college and scholarship application assistance, and leadership development for undocumented students in Georgia.
As a first-generation student, Valeria intimately understands individuals' challenges when navigating higher education with limited support. Her passion for coaching is deeply rooted in her experiences and further fueled by her diverse admissions counseling roles. Working with students from varied backgrounds, she is inspired by their unwavering determination to pursue education despite facing adversity.
Valeria’s teaching style is kind but firm, allowing students to have grace with themselves while encouraging them to take steps to achieve their goals—a responsibility that is ultimately up to them. She ensures each student's wants and dreams are centered in every conversation. For example, a student may want to be a doctor; ensuring they know each step to take in the college admissions journey is one step closer to achieving their dream. Valeria is open-minded and willing to talk through every decision, big or small. She is excellent at recasting ideas back to the applicant in a clear, concise manner, and she is a thoughtful listener and deep thinker who takes time to absorb and understand how to strengthen a candidate’s ideas.
When she isn’t coaching, Valeria enjoys writing, jogging, journaling (physically + digitally), playing Animal Crossing, and board games.
Yes, we help first-time test-takers and retakers ace the SSAT. The SSAT is offered eight times per year – we’re ready to help your child prepare for their next test date.
We welcome parent involvement and always strive to keep communication open between students, families, and tutors. Our progress tracker enables you to check your child’s progress, tutor comments, and next steps at any time.
Our SSAT tutor matching process ensures students are paired with their best-fit tutor based on student/family preferences, goals, and needs. A lot of the information we need to make an informed decision comes from the intake form you complete at the beginning of our engagement.
You can register for the SSAT on the EMA SSAT website here.
Excluding the experimental section (which doesn’t count toward your final score), there are four SSAT sections administered in random order. You have 25 minutes to answer all questions in each section:
Students receive percentile scores in the following areas:
You’ll also receive section scores for each of these areas; for the Middle Level, scaled section scores range between 440 and 710, and Upper Level scores range between 500 and 800.
The best plan for you and your child depends on the level of support they need, their availability, and other factors. If you’re unsure which program works best for you, our team is ready to help – set up a call with us today to learn more!
Middle Level SSATs are for students in grades 5, 6, and 7. Upper Level tests are for students in grade 8 or above.
