The academic world can feel very high-stakes, and fear of embarrassment or failure can make the block feel even more intractable, like a knot that grows harder to untangle when more tension is applied. She approaches conversations about learning blocks very much like she would approach a real knot: first, she takes the tension off. Then, she rotates the problem into three dimensions to identify where the thread is lost and what alternative approaches or knowledge might provide leverage. Her ultimate goal in this iterative process of examination, gentle experimentation, and gradual loosening is to help students approach these moments as puzzles rather than roadblocks, fostering metacognitive troubleshooting skills that enhance learning and resilience.

In her free time, Alison is a novice knitter and macramé hobbyist. She also practices aerial skills and is learning how to play the mandolin.

Alyssa graduated with honors from Fordham University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Integrative Neuroscience. Currently, she is pursuing her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine. With a wealth of tutoring experience, including serving as a teaching assistant at the graduate level, she has successfully guided more than 250 students toward achieving their academic aspirations.

Brian began his professional career as a mathematical physicist working in the areas of quantum gravity and unified field theories. During graduate school, he discovered how much he enjoyed teaching math and physics to students. While working as a physics professor, he won several national teaching awards which led to him writing 25+ textbooks for Pearson and McGraw-Hill.  Today, he owns several academic publishing, curriculum development, and curriculum resource companies

Carlos completed his undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate degrees from Florida International University. Carlos’ tutoring journey began with a passion for sharing knowledge and making a positive impact on students’ lives. Dante earned his Bachelor of Engineering with a focus on Nuclear Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Alongside tutoring, Dante currently works as a Mechanical Design Engineer and Nuclear Analyst for Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL).

Dante's passion for tutoring stems from his genuine love for learning. David graduated with Summa Cum Laude honors from the College of the Ozarks, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art. He has been actively involved in the education realm since 1999; he began tutoring in 2005 and successfully owned and operated his tutoring business, HELP Tutoring, from 2009 to 2020. He has tutored approximately 500 students over the last couple of decades. Francis earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Maryland. He started his tutoring journey when a friend's brother sought his help for SAT preparation, impressed by Francis's perfect score in the math section. Since then, Francis has continued to enjoy and actively engage in tutoring.

Francis's passion for tutoring originates from his own educational experiences. As a student, he wished for teachers to explain concepts in a simple way, using more visual aids, similar to how one would explain a concept to a 5-year-old. Now, as a tutor, he strives to offer this kind of accessible learning experience to students who may be struggling in the classroom. He specializes in tutoring for the ACT, SAT, SSAT, ISEE, and AP.

Sebastian's tutoring philosophy is grounded in the belief that everyone is capable of success. He tailors his approach to the students' pace, employing straightforward language to enhance understanding. Sebastian identifies the root of the problem, breaks down complex concepts, and empowers students through consistent positive reinforcement. In his free time, Francis enjoys powerlifting, hanging out with friends, watching sports, specifically the NFL and NBA, and watching Netflix. He is also classically trained in piano and cello.

Hope graduated Magna Cum Laude from Boston University with a Bachelor of Science in Film and Television with a concentration in Sociology. She's played a significant role in students' educational journeys, including serving as a teaching assistant for a film production class at Tufts University. She first began tutoring out of a simple desire to help others learn.

Driven by the goal of helping students unlock their full potential, Hope acknowledges that traditional classroom teaching doesn't always cater to every student's needs. She aims to offer personalized learning experiences to foster academic growth. She specializes in ACT and SAT preparation, English tutoring, and AP courses.

Hope's tutoring methodology revolves around flexibility and repetition. Her aim is to ensure students feel completely at ease with the test or course material, allowing them to tackle it with confidence. Recognizing that each student learns differently, she tailors her approach to meet individual needs. At the core of her strategy is the pursuit of understanding the "why" behind any learning blocks. She engages in meaningful conversations with students to pinpoint the root cause of the issue. Rather than applying band aid fixes, she delves deeply to address and break down the problem comprehensively. In the past, Hope used to memorize country flags for fun. Nowadays, she enjoys writing and singing music.

Jade holds a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Religion from Boston University. While there, she earned a scholarship to study in Cambodia and Vietnam, received the President’s Volunteer Service Award, won four academic awards, achieved high honors, and secured a U.S. government scholarship for teaching English abroad. With 12 years of tutoring experience, Jade volunteered as an English teacher for immigrants, served as a professional tutor mentor, and was a teaching assistant in Vietnam through a Fulbright scholarship. Despite facing obstacles from a limited educational background, Jade's success story is a testament to the transformative power of mentorship and education. These challenges fueled her determination to create a positive impact in the lives of students facing similar struggles.

James completed his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Government from the University of Iowa before also completing his Master’s degree in Journalism from the same institution. After working as a national and international news reporter for several years, he transitioned to full-time teaching, motivated by his passion for helping students achieve their academic goals. James has 21 years of teaching experience, including his current role as a Journalism and American Government Teacher at Chicago Public Schools. He also regularly conducts tutoring sessions and has tutored over 500 students.

For James, tutoring is a means to share his knowledge and help others succeed. He finds great satisfaction in witnessing the "lightbulb" moments students experience. He specializes in ACT and SAT tutoring, as well as US history, world history, American government, American literature, writing, journalism, and economics.

James' extensive teaching experience, deep subject knowledge, and empathy for today's youth distinguish him as a tutor. He is approachable, friendly, and entirely student-focused. He tailors his tutoring to each student's needs and emphasizes successful outcomes, often making uninteresting material engaging by drawing parallels with the real world and subject matter.

Jamila earned her Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Cell Science from the University of Florida and is currently an MD candidate at the University of South Florida. Her journey into tutoring began when she observed her classmates grappling with complex physics concepts, inspiring her to embark on the mission of simplifying these topics. Since then, she has been a dedicated tutor for three years.

Specializing in tutoring biology, chemistry, physics, statistics, and SAT prep, Jamila empathizes with the challenges these subjects present and is fueled by a desire to make them more accessible. 

As a tutor, Jamila actively engages students in their own learning process, encouraging them to pinpoint weaknesses or gaps in understanding before she provides her observations. Demonstrating her commitment to providing the most effective support, Jamila conducts thorough research in the subjects she tutors.

Leah graduated with a double major in Mathematics and Writing from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During her time at MIT, she won multiple writing awards and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. She also served as a teaching assistant for calculus and differential equations, where she conducted office hours, led recitations, and provided additional problem-solving sessions to help students grasp difficult concepts. One of her most notable contributions was co-developing and co-leading a rapid prototyping workshop aimed at cultivating problem-solving skills and facilitating quick iteration and testing of solutions. With eight years of teaching and tutoring experience working with over 100 students, Leah looks forward to building a supportive relationship with Foundation Learning students and helping them take charge of their education.

Leah’s passion for tutoring is rooted in the profound satisfaction she experiences when witnessing students' transformative "ah-ha!" moments as they conquer concepts they once found daunting. She finds it deeply fulfilling to guide students through challenges and see their knowledge and confidence grow. She specializes in tutoring for the SAT and ACT and for AP calculus, pre-calculus, trigonometry, and algebra.

Matthew graduated from East Stroudsburg University but was also accepted to Penn State University. He boasts over 20 years of teaching experience. He currently works for the Berwick Area School District as an AP Physics and AP Capstone teacher. As a dedicated teacher, Matthew recognized the opportunity to extend his impact beyond the classroom to help even more students, which is why he started tutoring. He has been instrumental in guiding numerous students to realize their dreams, even facilitating admissions to esteemed institutions such as MIT, Columbia, UPenn, Carnegie Mellon, and more. 

Matthew's passion for tutoring is fueled by his enjoyment of one-on-one engagement with students and helping them acquire new skills. He finds immense satisfaction in assisting students in reaching their academic goals more efficiently than anticipated. He specializes in tutoring AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2, AP Mechanics, AP Electromagnetism, AP Research, High School Physics, and College Physics.
